About psychotherapy - what is it and how does it work?
Psychotherapy is a way of tackling problems which you may have been
encountering recently or which you may have been struggling with for many
years.
Therapy aims to create deep and lasting change through talking. It offers an
opportunity, whatever your stage of life, to reflect on yourself, your current
situation, your childhood and your family experiences. Often these early
experiences will have influenced your adult life in many ways. They may, for
example, lie behind all kinds of symptoms such as depression, anxiety or low self-esteem.
They may also lie behind repeating negative patterns of behaviour or
repeating difficulties in relationships with others.
Exploring the often hidden links between the past and the present is one of the
tasks of psychotherapy. Change, understanding and growth come about in
discussion and in a trusting relationship with the therapy group or the therapist.
