About Guildford Therapy
Guildford Therapy offers two kinds of psychotherapy – group and individual.
A therapeutic group can be a powerful agent of change. Up to eight people,
plus either one or two therapists, meet in an atmosphere of complete
confidentiality. As trust develops, new solutions to old problems may be found.
Individuals can be helped to get in touch with painful, suppressed feelings
which could be causing their difficulties and symptoms. Group members see
themselves through the eyes of others and receive valuable feedback and
support. They gain a deeper understanding of themselves and how they relate
to others whilst actually practising new ways of relating. Groups can also help
those who find it hard to express their feelings and needs.
Individual psychotherapy offers a similarly confidential and safe environment
where issues can be explored in a one-to-one relationship with a therapist. This
can be a prelude or an alternative to a group.
How long does it take?
People are sometimes worried about the commitment involved in therapy.
When the gains start to be felt, these concerns often fall away.
- For group analytic psychotherapy, it’s helpful to allow a minimum of
eighteen months to two years. A session lasts for an hour and a half.
- For individual psychotherapy, a similar period is recommended. Sessions
last for fifty minutes.
- Where problems are not too deep-rooted, a briefer period of individual
therapy may be appropriate.
